The course was developed In the framework of the DocHub project.
The course is focused on training and practicing C1 overall competences both
written and oral.
The aim of this course is to develop the following competencies for Ph.D. researchers:
Identify the purpose, audience, structure, style and follow the content requirements for writing and speaking in academic environment. Develop communication skills in academic English field. Express ideas with clarity and precision in their field of research. Use the formal style properly and select relevant verbal strategies depending on the genre and purpose of academic expression. Demonstrate the natural and smooth flow of language. Argue a research position convincingly in oral academic communication. Structure written texts and oral messages appropriately. Plan and implement the writing process, organizing the structural parts of a text (introductory, body, and concluding parts). Construct a thesis statement, main points and supporting ideas and details. Apply a variety of writing patterns (defining, classifying, contrast/comparison, cause/effect, argumentative). Use varied sentence structure. Paraphrase and summarize academic texts. Ensure coherence of the written text, including the use of efficient transitions. Know how to avoid plagiarism (intentional and unintentional) in writing. Be aware of requirements for references in academic writing and presentations. Know how to use quotations and in-text citations in academic writing. Plan, outline, and deliver an oral academic presentation. The objectives of the course are to help Ph.D. students develop skills to:
1. structure, develop, edit and prepare an academic article for submission;
2. plan and write an article abstract and a conference abstract;
3. plan, organize and deliver an academic presentation with visuals.
Learning Outcomes
The Ph.D. students are expected to be able to:
- prepare an article for academic publication;
- write two types of abstracts (article and conference abstracts);
- prepare and deliver a presentation in academic settings.
