In 2018, International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) launched an innovative and interactive civic education course called “Democracy: From Theory to Practice” for higher education institutions. The course’s objective is to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes related to effective participation of young people in their country’s democratic processes in the digital age. Three components make up the course’s cornerstone:

  • Training program and course materials;
  • Interactive civic education teaching methods;
  • A group action project developed and implemented by students.

The course covers gender equality, diversity, electoral rights and enfranchisement, inclusiveness and accessibility of persons with disabilities, the role of youth, media literacy, digital participation, money in politics, electoral systems, good governance, rule of law and public corruption.

In the 2022/2023 academic year, the course is available in 46 educational institutions in Ukraine despite the full-scale invasion of Russia. The full list of IFES partner institutions of higher education can be found via the link.

“Democracy: From Theory to Practice” сourse is based on the IFES Global Civic Education Methodology for Higher Education Institutions “Strengthening Engagement through Education for Democracy – SEED”. The curriculum, course materials and methodology are designed specifically for Ukraine with the aim of developing democratic values and attitudes among students.
